Radlett Underpass

The Radlett FRC Box Structure is a crucial infrastructure element designed to allow new local railway traffic beneath the existing Midlands mainline. Weighing 6000 tonnes, the reinforced concrete underpass was jacked into position during a nine-day possession.

Project Overview

The structure was stand-jacked through advanced techniques, allowing the entire underpass to be incrementally slid into position. This highly complex operation was carried out during a strategically planned Network Rail blockade over the Christmas period, a time chosen to minimise the impact on train services.

Scope Overview

Our scope of work comprised of the construction of a guide slab, temporary push slab and the underpass structure. The guide slab composed of a 300mm thick reinforced concrete slab with perimeter beams and four number 2.8m deep anchoring spades. The temporary concrete push slab was constructed at the end of the structure and contained various cast-in items required for the jacking process. The push slab was cut off and broken out after underpass was jacked into position.

The bridge structure was constructed over the top of the guide slab and consisted of abutments and wing walls, with all concrete elements constructed in-situ. The structure contained 1500t of reinforcement arranged in a complex design that required temporary engineering solutions before being encased in 2000m3 of concrete.
