Brent Cross Town Substation

  • 80MVA Substation
  • Net Zero 2030
  • London, UK

A colourful 'wrap' around the sustainable energy substation at Brent Cross Town has created one of the largest permanent public artwork in the UK. This new 80MVA substation will be critical to realising the town's ambition to be net zero carbon by 2030, providing clean power for homes, offices, retail and leisure spaces.

Project Overview

This 80MVA substation will be the primary source of energy powering the new Brent Cross Town development. The new substation will be critical to realising the town's ambition to be net zero carbon by 2030, providing clean power for homes, offices, retail and leisure spaces. We were instructed to design, install and complete the cable trenching, duct conduits, concrete bases and the structure that will house the Primary Substation.

Scope Overview

Our scope for this project included the development of design to RIBA Stage 3 under a PCSA agreement, alongside the design of associated highways, landscaping, utilities and drainage infrastructure. Following completion of the pre-construction phase, the works progressed into the main construction contract, commencing with enabling earthworks and groundworks.

Sustainability was key to the project, approximately 50% of the steel frame was procured from re-purposed steel saving 99.2 tonnes of CO2e. The concrete used on this project was a combination of low-cement concrete and new Earth Friendly Concrete, a cement-free alternative. This saved up to 33% and 70% of embodied carbon respectively, compared with mixes that do not use any cement replacement.
