Gatwick Airport Substation

  • Gatwick Airport
  • Pier 1
  • South East, UK

We were awarded the contract to construct the new substation and terminal air-bridge bases as part of the Pier 1 Development at Gatwick Airport, South Terminal. This provided the electrical transmission, generation, and distribution to power the new passenger gate rooms and new hi-tech baggage system, capable of processing 4,250 bags an hour.

Scope Overview

Our works included reduced-level earthworks and excavation for a reinforced ground-bearing slab, together with trenches, pipeways and service chambers serving the Terminal South building.

Working within a live airport environment, the excavation works were carefully coordinated around numerous existing operational services, with all excavated material removed from site. We also constructed a two-storey substation building comprising a structural steel frame, reinforced concrete walls, floor and roof slabs with high-quality concrete finishes throughout.

The project included the installation of underground HV and LV ducting networks with in-situ concrete draw chambers, utilising high-specification materials including high-density polyethylene and twinwall ducting systems. The completed facility was finished with bespoke architectural metal cladding, louvred doors and ventilation panels.
